Welcome to Ink & Airwaves, the podcast from ReadMyBook.net, where we sit down with authors and creators to explore the stories behind their work.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with award-winning author Philip Gabriel about his novel Legendary Black, the inspiration behind the story, his writing journey, and the importance of perseverance. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

Ink & Airwaves Spotlight: Philip Gabriel on Legendary Black, Writing Through the Years, and the Stories That Shape Us

Some stories entertain us. Others inspire us to look at history, family, and our own dreams through a new lens.

In this episode of Ink & Airwaves, I had the privilege of sitting down with award-winning author Philip Gabriel to talk about his novel Legendary Black—a book that beautifully blends historical fiction, coming-of-age storytelling, friendship, family, and the enduring legacy of Harry Houdini.

One of the first things Philip shared was the journey behind the book itself. Legendary Black wasn't written overnight. It was the result of seven years of dedication while balancing everyday life and a full-time career. That reminder alone is encouraging for every writer who has ever wondered if they're taking "too long" to finish a dream.

At the heart of the novel is Frederick Black, a young boy whose life becomes intertwined with the legacy of Harry Houdini. What begins as a fascinating historical premise quickly becomes a story about courage, identity, perseverance, and discovering the unique gifts we each carry.

As we talked, one theme kept resurfacing: the delicate balance between protecting the people we love and allowing them the freedom to discover who they are. It's a message that resonates with parents, educators, and anyone who has ever been encouraged to pursue something others didn't fully understand.

One of my favorite parts of our conversation centered around history itself. Philip shared the extensive research that went into recreating England during the 1930s and 1940s—from everyday life and traditions to the influence Harry Houdini still held nearly a century after his passing. Reading Legendary Black feels like stepping into another era while still connecting deeply with emotions that remain timeless.

We also explored Philip's writing process, discussing how stories evolve over multiple drafts and how patience often produces stronger books. As someone currently writing my own novel, I found his perspective incredibly encouraging. His reminder that meaningful work grows over time was one of the conversations that stayed with me long after we finished recording.

Of course, no author conversation would be complete without talking about what's next. Philip gave us a glimpse into his upcoming novel, Vega, an ambitious story that follows one man's life from childhood to becoming one of history's greatest astronauts. While very different from Legendary Black, it carries the same heart for character-driven storytelling, history, perseverance, and purpose.

One thing became clear throughout our conversation: Philip doesn't simply write adventures. He writes stories about becoming the person we're meant to be.

Whether you're a fan of historical fiction, coming-of-age adventures, inspiring character journeys, or simply love hearing how authors bring their ideas to life, this episode offers something special.

Thank you, Philip, for sharing your journey, your writing process, and the heart behind Legendary Black. We can't wait to follow your continued adventures as Vega prepares for launch.
